Application Information

Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center!  We accept applications only through ERASŪ—The Electronic Residency Application Service.  We look for candidates with excellent academic performance and a strong interest in general internal medicine as a stepping stone to an academic position, further subspecialty training, a hospitalist position, or private practice. 

The Department of Internal Medicine offers 12 categorical and 10 preliminary positions each year.  Interviews are by invitation only and are based on the applicant's academic performance, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, and other accomplishments as detailed in the ERAS application. Interviews are conducted between mid-November and the last week of January. 

Before an invitation can be extended, we must have the following materials on file from ERAS:

  • ERAS Common Application Form (CAF)
  • Personal statement
  • Official medical school transcripts
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (Dean's Letter)
  • An official letter from your Internal Medicine Department Chair (or his/her designee)
  • At least 2 additional letters of recommendation from faculty members at your medical school
  • USMLE Scores (or equivalent)

International Medical Graduates (in addition):

  • ECFMG Status Report
  • Visa Status
  • Documentation of additional continuing medical education in clinical medicine in the United States
  • NOTE: While research abilities/experience is valuable, a strong emphasis is placed on recent clinical experience.

We are frequently asked for specific criteria for International Medical Graduates. Historically, IMG candidates who have been invited to interview have had the following characteristics:

  • USMLE Scores (all steps taken) above 210 (85) on the first attempt
  • Pass the USMLE clinical skills exam
  • J-1 Visas or US Naturalization (select, highly qualified candidates may be considered for H1b visas)
  • A minimum of six months of US clinical experience
