South Africa Trip

  • Since October of 1997, residents in the department of internal medicine have had the unique opportunity of doing a one-month medicine rotation in Zimbabwe, Africa. This rotation has recently moved to Capetown South Africa.
  • Expenses, including airfare to South Africa, room and board, and immunizations are covered by the Department.
  • The South Africa month provides residents with exceptional educational and cultural experiences. Residents work side-by-side with South African physicians in government and mission hospitals, as well as a local medicine clinic.
  • Residents learn first hand about bush medicine, tropical disease, and a variety of other conditions including tuberculosis, rheumatic fever, typhoid, and rubella.
  • Residents lodge with a local family near Capetown.
  • During their stay, residents enjoy time away from the hospital with excursions to Victoria falls in Zimbabwe and Namibia.
  • Safaris have proven to be a popular way to spend time away from the hospital during the rotation. Residents have an opportunity to visit some of the worlds’ best known game reserves.
  • It is a wonderful opportunity to obtain some great photographs like those seen on this page.
  • This is truly a unique opportunity offered through our program.
